A handstand is a constructed shape. Is it made out of arms, legs and a body? Or is the body really made out of hot chocolate, are the arms made from liquorice and is my head a cherry that will soon explode? “Selfie with eggs” is a show that creates an insight into the world of an acrobat. It uses both movement and spoken word to create a connection between the abstract esthetics of dance and the emotions of a performer. The text refers to scientific experiments in a funny yet pointed way.
I have been practising handbalancing since I was five years old. What exactly is so fascinating about it? And what happens to me, when I do this "being-upside-down-thing"?
A handstand is a statement.
A handstand is a physical state in which I am very strong and very fragile.
A handstand is a struggle for power with gravity.
It is like a house of cards, built with great care but sure to collapse in the end.
"Image - Selfie with eggs" combines circus, dance and spoken word to the sound of electronic music. It is one of the first pieces of contemporary circus produced in Germany. It premiered in 2014 in Kassel, Germany.
Length: 45 minutes
Co-director: Caroline Intrup
This show is also available as an outdoor version for festivals.
“If Kraftwerk made circus, it would look something like this. It sounds like it’s going to be angular, arty and obscure. And in some ways it is. But it’s also funny, camp, frivolous, sexy, and so highly skilled. People were talking about it all night when it showed at Jacksons Lane. Voguing meets electro-robotics in a feat of handstand endurance. I just wanted to see it again and again.”
Adrian Berry, Artistic Director Jacksons Lane
